Kina: Dömda för metoo-protest

Den 14 juni i år dömdes journalisten Sophia Huang Xueqin till tre år och sex månaders fängelse, och aktivisten Wang Jianbing till fem års fängelse för "subversivt motstånd mot staten" genom sitt engagemang för Metoo och för att ha ordnat möten med andra aktivister. De greps 2021 och har hållits häktade sedan dess. Amnesty har fått information om att bådas hälsa har försämrats under fångenskap och att de har nekats adekvat vård.

I am writing to express my concern for #MeToo activist Huang Xueqin and labour activist Wang Jiangbing. On 14 June 2024, Huang was sentenced to five years and Wang to three years and six months only for exercising their rights to freedom of expression and association. Both of them have formally filed appeals with the Guangdong High Court. Furthermore, I am extremely concerned about their health. Therefore, I urge you to release them immediately and unconditionally. Pending their release, ensure that they have prompt access to adequate medical care and that they are not subjected to torture or other forms of ill-treatment.

Belarus: Protestledare i isolering

Maryia Kalesnikava är en välkänd dissident i Belarus som har hållits fängslad i fyra år och är dömd till elva år i fängelse. Hon hålls isolerad och får inte ta emot besök eller prata med andra fångar. Hennes hälsa har den senaste tiden försämrats och hon uppges nu väga endast 45 kilo. Maryia Kalesnikava hade en framträdande roll i oppositionens kampanj under valet 2020 och satt i rådet som efter valet organiserade massprotesterna mot president Aleksandr Lukasjenko.

I write to demand public information about prisoner of conscience Maryia Kalesnikava. As you will undoubtedly be aware, Maryia Kalesnikava was arrested on 7 September 2020 and later sentenced to 11 years in prison following an unfair trial based on false charges. Since February 2023, she has been denied all contact with the outside world and has been regularly placed in punishment cells. She has been detained solely in reprisal for her prominent role in challenging the disputed 2020 presidential election and in the subsequent peaceful protests. I urge you to take immediate action to ensure that Maryia Kalesnikava is immediately and unconditionally released. In the meantime, I urge you to ensure that she is no longer held incommunicado.

Turkiet: Eritreaner tvångsutvisas

Hundratals eritreaner riskerar att tvångsutvisas från Turkiet till Eritrea, där de riskerar tortyr och godtyckliga gripanden. Nyligen deporterade Turkiet 300 eritreaner. Det är olagligt att lämna Eritrea utan tillstånd och myndigheterna anser att det är förräderi att söka asyl i ett annat land. Personer som deporterats grips rutinmässigt och interneras i överfulla häkten. Amnesty kräver att Turkiet upphör med avvisningarna.

Dear Mr Atilla Toros, I write to express my concern about the authorities' imminent plans to forcibly return Eritrean nationals who are detained at Aydın Removal Centre. More than 200 individuals have been deported in the previous months. Amnesty International has documented in the past that people returned to Eritrea have been detained incommunicado and tortured upon return because leaving the country without authorisation is a crime. I urge you not to forcibly return people to Eritrea, where they would face a real risk of serious human rights violations. I also urge you to respect Türkiye’s international obligations under the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, the UN Convention Against Torture and customary international law to uphold the principle of non-refoulement, which is binding on all states.
